The Stations of the Cross, also known as The Way of the Cross, began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary.
Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations currently found in almost every Catholic Church.
The 14 stations commemorate Jesus Christ's last day on earth as a man. Good Friday is the actual day that these events of Jesus Christ's final hours occurred.
The goal of this devotion is to “walk” in Jesus’ shoes by praying and meditating on each of the events (stations) that Jesus experienced. When we meditate on the Stations of the Cross, we can learn the true meaning of love, perseverance, obedience, humility, and patience.
